Bertone, the Italian car styling firm designed the first wedge-shaped Lancia Stratos, in 1971.
A new version called HF (High Fidelity) was introduced later and weighed less than 1 ton. This car had an engine that could generate 320 hp power with 24 valves. This Stratos model won a number of races in the 1970s and 80s.
The 1976 Safari Rally was held between 15-19 April. Swedish drivers Björn Waldegard and Hans Thorszelius who participated in this race driving a Lancia Stratos HF however could not finish the race as they developed an engine starter problem.
This race was eventually won by the Flying Sikh – Joginder Singh Bhachu *, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer 1600 GSR.
* another award winning Volvo in the 1965 race, driven by Joginder Singh Bhachu is also available @ Scale Model Cart
