The Cherokee made its presence during the time American Motors Corporation or AMC (of AMC Pacer fame) were owners of the JEEP brand.
Its development took place after AMC learned the General Motors was about to launch a new 2-door Blazer. Since Renault was responsible for selling JEEP products in Europe, Renault decided to pitch in and assist AMC to develop this new product. While a new suspension called Quadralink that resisted rollovers was patented by AMC, the drivetrain was from Renault. AMC also decided to give an extra option to the public i.e. along with the 2-door a 4-door version will be made.
What finally evolved in 1984 was a distinct brand called Cherokee that changed the definition of a 'modern' SUV. The public for the first time started looking at an SUV from a 'large' limousine point of view discarding the old thought of a converted pick-up truck.
This scale model is a rendition of the 2nd generation Cherokee.
