The idea behind the creation of this aircraft was based on several factors: the ability to carry a maximum payload, travel wider distances, and the ability to land and take-off on dusty airstrips or shorter runways. This aeroplane should also have the ability to operate in sub-zero temperatures in Siberia and the Arctic. The first model of the Il-76 appeared in 1974 when it was handed over to the Soviet military.

This freighter aircraft, designed by the design bureau of Ilyushin, later became the backbone of several militaries across the world. Even the Indian Air Force uses them in large numbers.
