William Hewson who was running an automobile dealership used to be an employee at an aircraft manufacturing company. And so he always felt that there's a scope to build special cars incorporating airplane design and technology.
He formed a venture called Hewson Pacific Corporation and suggested his idea to a firm called Coachcraft who specialised in making custom made cars for Hollywood actors. And so the task was undertaken to build a car that would travel at high speed i.e. like a rocket and yet cost US$ 1000.
So using a Ford made 60 hp V8 flathead engine, Coachcraft prepared this 3-passenger, single-seater car draping the entire car with aluminium panel sheets. This car being aerodynamic therefore had no protruding headlamps, tail lamps, door handles, etc. Hewson further provided several new features - curved windshield, automatic transmission with hydraulic torque converter. This car had the option to be covered in three different ways i.e. detachable metal top, clear plastic top for winters and a fabric top.
The cost of making this one car, however could not be recovered by Coachcraft from Hewson as he had no money to pay and so they decided to retain this car in their backyard. Several years later, this Hewson Rocket car was sold to a buyer for only US$ 650.
