Board track racing, a dangerous form of racing used to take place in the early 1920s on wooden cycling tracks that were laid down at a particular angle, inside stadiums or arena. The motorcycles that used to participate in these races had no brakes and therefore to stop one, the only way was to kill the engine with the help of a switch. Riders were therefore prone to severe accidents and many got killed due to flying splinters of wooden chips that came off the tracks.
One of the favourite motorcycles for such races is this 1926 made Harley-Davidson 8 Valve Racer. This was at a time when the brand H-D (Harley-Davidson) was already famous.
This 8 Valve Racer model with 4 valves per cylinder and dome-shaped pistons (this increased the compression ratio) also had hemi-heads (hemispherical heads) inside the combustion chamber. With an 800 cc engine having a compression ratio of 5.0:1 and a bore stroke of 3” x 3.5” (inch), the engine was mounted on a frame called ‘keystone’. This mounting helped the engine to transfer vibrations directly on to the entire frame structure and reducing overall weight at a particular point.
Having a top speed of 175 km/hr, this H-D bike competed fiercely in every race against the Indian (motorcycle brand) 8 Valve Racer. Cost of this H-D model was beyond the reach of the common consumer i.e. while most expensive motorcycles cost US$ 350, this H-D was priced a little over US$ 1500 (or Rs. 16 lakh, in today’s value).
This large 1:6 scaled model from VMB*, is an exact rendition of the world famous H-D model that was used so often in board track racing in the 1920s.
* Dutch brand, VMB is now closed and there will be no further reproductions of this motorcycle. With time, VMB made collectibles will grow in demand and have a very high collectible value
