Somewhere in the late 1930's, Gordon Hanson felt that the large American cars have a long turning circle compared to European cars and wanted to reduce this. No doubt, American cars were huge and longer and therefore the turning radius could not be improved but that didn't stop him to ponder. So this Californian in 1943 goes on to make one without compromising on spaciousness that every American desired.
He began with an unusual idea - not as usual with two axles, of which only one axle could be steerable, but he chose a single central axle that he placed before and behind one steerable wheel. As this trapezoidal design appeared like cut diamond, Gordon Hanson decided to name his car Diamond.
But because of his extraordinary wheel assembly design, Hanson could not use a known chassis so he had to produce one, himself. For the engine, he selected a 100 HP, V8 engine of a Ford truck, that was installed in the rear between the axle and the rear single wheel. Power was transferred over the transmission to the central axle.
Hanson finally achieved what he wanted to his car's turning radius was 50% smaller then every other American cars. By 1947 he could finish his project and got the necessary Road & Safety approvals. But since his personal investment and time taken (almost 2 years) in making one car was so huge he could not proceed to make another and sold his only creation to an Exhibiting Gallery in 1967.
This scale model is in RESIN and only 333 pieces have been made therefore making its value grow by each passing day. Rare collectible.
