The Goggomobil T250 were made in Germany between 1955-1969 and was a small car that could seat 4 people and having no luggage. It had an air-cooled, 2 stroke, 2 cylinder, 300 cc engine. Later a 400 cc engine was added to give more power.
Not many here would know this, but this model of the Goggomobil Saloon car (T-series) was supposed to be India's ‘people car’ that came decades later, had the proposal been passed by the Government in the late 50's.
This car was even shown to Jawaharlal Nehru in the summer of 1959 and a demo also organised. Even offices were set up in different cities by a firm called Associated Corporation of Industries (ACI) then headquartered at Commerce House, Ballard Estate, Bombay who planned to produce them. Unfortunately all this didn't happen due to Indian beauracracy and red-tapism. Thirty years later, the Maruti 800 bagged the label of being the 'people car'.
Over 2 lakh cars of this Goggomobil were produced.
