Gloster - Gladiator Mk II - Finnish Air Force - Karlsson Scale -

Built by the Gloster Aircraft Company, the Gladiator Mk II was designed by Henry Phillip Folland and made its first test flight in 1933. After several trials, the first plane was inducted into the Royal Air Force in 1937. This was also the Royal Air Force (RAF)'s last biplane to be used in the war theatre.

Approximately 750 were built for various air forces across the world, including the Chinese Nationalist Air Force and the Royal Egyptian Air Force. Several were purchased by the Nordic countries, including Finland and Norway.

This scale model is a rendition of the modified plane with skis that was flown by a volunteer pilot, Josef Gideon Karlsson, of the Swedish Air Force while assisting the Finnish Air Force to defend against the onslaught of Russian attacks over Rovaniemi (now famous for Santa Claus), Finland.

Flying under the Finnish flag, Karlsson took part in a fight with six enemy aircraft before shooting down one. He returned to the base after his plane suffered damage, but created a record of sorts by being the last biplane to fight in a war theatre.
