General Motors Corporation (GMC) won the Army contract in 1941 to produce trucks but there were few conditions attached - the production time had to be minimal, the truck would have to be simple, rugged and yet multi-functional. Also, they could be transported easily on ships. All these conditions were required as USA got dragged into the World War II.
The engine was GM's 270 series, 6-cylinder 4.5 litre engine that gave 105 hp. Though 6x6 its top speed was 80 km/hr.
It had this strange name CCKW as it denoted the following,
C = production year 1941
C = Cab Standard
K = Front wheel drive
W = Rear wheel drive
Since it was a 2.5-ton truck men in uniform termed it as Deuce and a half or simply 'Jimmy'. Over 550,000 f these were made. One variant was a Fire Tender.
