Though the idea was generated from the civilian model, GAZ M21, the GAZ M22 Volga was a completely different car that was specifically developed as a stationwagon/estate to meet the requirements of state firms and their extended branches. Customers included state-owned factories, hospitals (converted into ambulances and hearses), airport escort "Follow-Me" cars, taxis, etc.
With a 2.5-litre ZMZ-made engine, this car had a high-roof and a flat bed at the rear as the rear seats were fully-foldable. It could carry 5-7 passengers and, if required, nearly 175 kg of payload at the back.
This model was also exported abroad after fitting them with Perkins and Rover engines.
