Showcased in the then Soviet Union just before the start of Moscow Olympics in 1980, the Volga 3102 made by GAZ (Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod) started production of this model since 1982 and continued to be made until 2010.
The development of this car began in the mid-seventies when the Soviets were looking at the European cars and felt the need to give their people more modern cars. So work began with the first of the prototype called the GAZ 3101. This new car had square and large headlamps, jet spray for the headlamps, baleen fish* type front grille and comfortable plush seats. The dashboard was given a new look and polyurethane was used extensively. It had front disc brakes and radial tyres. This was the beginning of the luxury brand called Volga.
* baleen is a hair like fine bristles that are present in baleen whales who have a filter system wherein the fish takes all the water inside and flushes the water out trapping the kill inside as food.
