Only 85 of this revolutionary and dynamic model were made after its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1955.
The Fuji Cabin micro car was a well engineered beauty for its time and style. With fibreglass body, one headlamp to appear like a snout, two passenger seats, round wing shaped doors and three wheels, it embodied a motor scooter with kick start to power its engine. It also had a reverse gear.
Commissioned by Ryuichi Tomiya who was at one time a designer for Nissan he was also known as the Leonardo da Vinci of Japan. He designed its monocoque body that weighed just 130 kg. Equipped with two-stroke, single cylinder engine it could go to top speed of 60 km/hr.
While the Honda Dream motorcycle cost about Rs. 32,000 (today’s equivalent), the Fuji Cabin with an all-weather protection would cost Rs. 42,000. However bad marketing plans did not help the designer to complete to his target of 500 micro cars.
