The Ford Escort Mark 1 or Mk1 was introduced in the winter of 1967 as a replacement for the long-running and popular Ford Anglia model. These were produced in 2 factories – Halewood, UK for the Right Hand Drive (RHD) and Genk, Belgium for all Left Hand Drive (LHD) models.
Sitting behind the steering wheel of this Alex Mann Racing Team's 215 bhp Ford Escort was Frank Gardner, who was virtually unbeatable. The car’s suspension and brakes were upgraded to give even the competing big V8s a run for their money. The partisan crowds at the 1968 races loved the cute British-designed Ford Escort with its Cosworth-Ford engine. The same car took the team to seven memorable victories and gave them an unassailable 84 point tally.
It was the only year that the iconic Ford Escort won the BTCC^ (British Touring Car Championship).
^ the BTCC first took place in 1958 and until 1987 was known as the British Saloon Car Championship
