Prince Bernhard who was born in former Germany was married to Princess (later Queen) Juliana of the Netherlands. He was instrumental in starting the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and was passionate about his cars. He knew Enzo Ferrari personally as he owned two Ferrari 212’s.
The development of this car took place at a time when Enzo Ferrari was completely engrossed in making the super luxurious Ferrari America series of models, including the Superamerica. But Prince Bernhard wanted a custom-built 'special' car, evolved from the Ferrari 250 GT Coupé and built by the house of Pininfarina. Enzo Ferrari simply could not refuse such a request.
Ferrari reworked the engine by providing a larger bore and raising the capacity of the engine to a 3.0-litre one. Later, another car was produced for Queen Lilane de Rethy, the second wife of King Leopold of Belgium. Only two such cars were ever produced.
