Built by FIAT’s special bus building division called FIAT Veicoli Industriali, the bus model 306/3 was developed as the successor to the earlier made 682RN, in 1956. This was FIAT’s first attempt to build a dedicated bus chassis instead of a body being draped over a truck chassis (a practice earlier followed).

While FIAT built the chassis, coachbuilding was left to bodybuilders such as Bianchi, Cansa, Viberti, Macchi, etc.
