Paul Newman was known to us as the famous Hollywood character who was more known for his philanthropic activities for the poor and the needy. But few knew that he was an ardent fan of Japanese cars and especially Datsun (Nissan’s former avatar). And lesser known was the fact that he once participated in a race with a Porsche 935 taking the second spot in the 1979 Le Mans 24hrs. race.
But his essential love was the Datsun model 510 that some say was the cheaper replica of the BMW 2002. His first 510 had the words PLN inscribed (PLN was his full name Paul Leonard Newman) and the no. 75 which was his lucky number. Team owner Bob Sharp Racing Team’s Datsun 510 was the first car driven by Paul Newman in 1970.
In less than two years Paul Newman improvised and started winning races. By 1973 Newman had won 5 of the 6 races of Sports Club Car of America (SCCA) races.
