The Datsun 280 ZX is actually the Fairlady Z, a very popular car in Japan in the late seventies. This car first rolled out in 1978 to counter the competition coming from British and American sport car manufacturers.
The Turbo version that rolled out in 1981 in USA used an L28ET engine whose design is actually that of a Mercedes-Benz model that were being produced under license by the Prince Motor Company (a firm that was soon purchased by Nissan/Datsun).
