Michelin that owned Citroen in the 70's wanted to test its newly made truck tyres at high speeds. The result was the development of the 'centipede' or this 11 wheel monster car called the DS PLR. It was so called as the design was heavily borrowed from the Citroen DS 19 car and PLR (Poids Lourd Rapide) meant 'fast truck' (in French).
The power came from two 5.7-litre Chevrolet V8 engines that also powered the 6 rear wheels. The front 4 wheels were responsible for steering this monstrous car. The 11th wheel was the test wheel that was mid-mounted for testing the tyres.
