It took the Citroen team nearly 18 years to develop this model keeping the project absolute secret as it was meant to be the successor to the popular Traction Avant.
At the 1955 Paris Auto Show, the Citroen DS 19 with a 1.9 litre engine was launched. It is said that during the first 15 minutes they booked over 700 cars and in the next 10 days there was booking of another 80,000 plus. It was a record that stood firm for over 60 years until as late as 2016 when Tesla's Model 3 was launched.
The team led by Bertoni (famous automotive designer), Magès and an aeronautical engineer called Lefèbvre developed one of the most aerodynamic designs of the 20th century. Several features provided in this car were an industry first including disc brakes that is today an industry standard.
After a decade of producing the DS 19, in 1965, a more powerful 2.1 litre engine was added i.e. DS 21. The Citroen DS 23 that came little later may be called as the final evolution of the DS series. This Pallas top edition model had height-adjusting driver seat, leather seats, noise insulation, etc.
