Citroen 2CV 4X4 Sahara Scale - 1:43

The Citroen 2CV 4X4 Sahara is the world’s first dual-engine 4x4 car. Developed by Citroen as a cheaper solution to the common public who wanted to go outdoors and enjoy different terrains. The company also saw its potential in North Africa where these could be used in the harsh and rough environment of the Sahara. Also, because there were several oil firms that worked in the southern deserts of Algeria, Citroen knew that these cars would be used in the sand dunes as the 2CV was light.

Because the 2CV had simple mechanical parts and was easy to maintain, Citroen decided to use two engines instead of one and therefore installed the second 425 cc engine at the rear (the two petrol tanks were located below the driver and front passenger seats).

Both the engines had separate carburettors and were mated to a 4-speed manual transmission connected by a single clutch pedal. Each engine with 18 hp power gave this car enough traction to move over rough roads as well as climb hills having a 45-degree gradient. The first car came out of the factory in 1958.

Less than 700 were produced in 13 years.
