Piero Dusio’s firm Consorzio Industriale Sportive Italia or Cisitalia developed their first single-seater car, D46 with parts borrowed from FIAT, in the year 1946.
In 1947, he and his talented team developed a powerful sports car with a 1.1 litre 4-cylinder engine having dual Weber made carburettors and a 4-speed manual gearbox. He named the model - Cisitalia 202 Spyder.
Soon he produced 5 identical models for the Mille Miglia race giving the cars specially made semi-elliptic leaf springs, telescopic dampers, four-wheel drum brakes, etc. He named this new model - Cisitalia 202 SMM (Spyder Mille Miglia).
At the 14th edition of the 1000 mile race called Mille Miglia conducted on 22.6.1947, a Cisitalia 202 SMM #179, driven by Italians Tazio Nuvolari and Francesco Carena took the 2nd position after driving for 16 hours and 32 minutes, beating the expectations of the spectators who thought that one of the Alfa Romeo’s would take the podium finish.
