S&S was founded in 1876 as Sayers and Scovill Company by William Sayers and A.R. Scovill and were coachbuilding specialists. They were more famous for the funeral limousines.
However in 1950, an unexpected order came from the Saudi Arabia embassy. The Saudi Arabian king Abdulaziz ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Faisal ibn Turki ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al Saud (more commonly known as Ibn Saud) wanted a set of cars for many of his wives (he is said to have fathered nearly 100 children).
These cars had to feature obscured glass windows that allowed his wives to see outside the car, but no one could look inside. He ordered 20 of them each at a price of USD 12,500 (equivalent of Rs. 92 lakh, in today's value).
S&S selected a Cadillac model and built that suited the founder of Saudi Arabia’s taste. Each car had six doors and specially selected black paint. The firm took exactly a year to ship all the 20 cars to Saudi Arabia through sea.
