Designed by a person whose bicycle design can be seen around the world (including India), Tom Karen the brain behind the creation of Raleigh Chopper bicycle also designed this microcar, Bond Bug.
This was around the time when Reliant Motors purchased the loss making firm Bond Motors in 1969. When the first model rolled out using Reliant Motors 700 cc inline-four petrol engine, the car looked completely different then the usual cars. Though the body used was fibreglass that made the car lighter, the ability to topple was countered with her low centre of gravity design.
This car was produced in two variants – 700E and 700ES (an upgraded model with alloy wheels, sports tyres, F1 type steering wheel, etc. Over 2000 of these microcars were produced before it ended in 1974. The car costs about GBP 630 (2019 equivalent would be GBP 8800 or Rs. 8 lakh)
