The French rail firm, PLM (Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée), which existed since the middle of the 19th century, had been studying the possibility of having a rail network that could connect Algiers (Algeria) to the Sahel region, i.e., Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Chad.
Therefore, the company decided to undertake a feasibility study with a trip that would cover the region. The six trucks selected were the Berliet VPD 6x4, a truck with a 4.0-litre 6-cylinder engine.
This scale model is an exact rendition of the Sahara - Niger expedition that was undertaken for the feasibility study in 1926.
