It is rumoured that had Hassanal Bolkiah Al-Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, or the Sultan of Brunei, not supported Bentley during its loss-making years, the brand would have collapsed then (Volkswagen, who are the current owners, acquired Bentley in 1998).
The Sultan of Brunei has in his collection more than 15 different types of Bentleys, including a few that were produced specifically for him and one-offs. His Bentley collection includes,
- Bentley Azure
- Bentley B2
- Bentley Buccaneer
- Bentley Camelot
- Bentley Continental R
- Bentley Dominator
- Bentley Grand Prix
- Bentley Imperial
- Bentley Java
- Bentley Monte Carlo
- Bentley Pegasus
- Bentley Rapier
- Bentley Silverstone
- Bentley Spectre
- Bentley Sports Estate
- Bentley Val d'Isere
Some models, for example, were produced in multiple quantities in different colour schemes. This Bentley B3 Coupe is one example. Produced for the first time in 1994, all the 12 cars built by the Italian design house Pininfarina (now owned by Mahindra) were made in different colour schemes. Pininfarina sub-contracted the work to Sergio Coggiola, a veteran at Ghia and (later) founder owner of Carrozziere Coggiola.
Though little is known (since all the cars were secretly bundled on planes to Brunei) of the various colour schemes that were produced by the Sultan, the paparazzi did manage to get images of a few cars that were painted in turquoise green, black, and red. The last car left the Bentley factory in 1995, as it took over a year to build all the cars.
