Codenamed Operation Iceberg, it was an amphibious assault on the Japanese coast of Okinawa by the United States Marines against the Japanese Imperial Army. This battle known as the Battle of Okinawa lasted for nearly three months with some of the intense dogfights between Japanese made Kawanishi planes and the American Thunderbolts.
Also called as Shiden / Shinden, the N1K-J was considered to be one of the finest land-based fighters during World War II. With a Nakajima Homare engine, these planes could fly at a top speed of 600 km/hr to distance of over 2000 kms.
