The M3 is evolution of BMW’s E30 platform having an S14 4-cylinder petrol engine. Later the 6-cylinder model was introduced.
The M3 was born in 1985 primarily out of necessity as BMW wanted to participate in Federation Internationale de l'Automobile's (FIA) Group A races. Since it was mandatory for a manufacturer to produce a minimum of 5000 cars before a model can participate in a race, BMW made the civilian version not expecting it to become a legendary car.
In the same year production of this civilian version began with widened wings, rear spoiler and a new windscreen.
