Part of a range of executive cars, this compact car was first produced in 1966. Production went on until 1977 with a BMW M10 1.6 litre engine. This model was first labelled as 1600-2, where the number ‘2’ signified the two doors. For ease in identifying, the model name was later changed to BMW 1602.
On 12th July, 1970, a BMW 1602 # 61 driven by Swiss René Herzog and Austrian Niki Lauda in the Group 2 class participated in the 6-hr Nurburgring rally.
This race that was dominated by Alfa Romeo's happened to be a jinx for the BMW – Alpina team as all the BMW cars failed to complete the race. This car too stopped halfway, as the distributor failed.
