Though BMW's Isetta was popular among the public the general perception was it was too small for a large family therefore prompting BMW to design a car that could be labelled as a microcar and yet have lots of space of a larger car.
Now, BMW had already decided that were going to introduce the model 700 LS in few months time, so to give the customer another choice of a larger car, the management at BMW decided to use the existing Isetta and stretch it longer. Powered by the motorcycle engine of their BMW R67, this 582 cc engine delivered 19.5 hp. This was in 1956.
Going by public's positive response to its new car, BMW in 1957 introduced a better designed BMW 600 with a larger body and more streamlined corners. However it was little more expensive than the popular Volkswagen Beetle and so for the next two years about 35,000 were built before BMW phased these out for the new 700LS.
This metal model in 1:43 is unique as its front door has a opening which is rare in this scale.
