A firm that started producing steam wagons and trucks in the beginning of the 20th century, Atkinson was turned in to a famous truck brand in the 1970s, after Seddon Diesel Vehicles purchased it. This truck brand existed right until 2009, before it was sold to IVECO, Italy.
One of the truck models, Mark II that was developed in 1968 had a completely new designed cabin. Frank Whalley who was the PR Manager for Seddon Diesel Vehicles then came up with the idea of naming different names for different configurations of trucks, they produced. For e.g. the 4 x 2 tractor units were called 'Borderer', while the 6 x 4 was called 'Venturer'. The double-axle chassis was named as the 'Raider', the 3-axle was 'Searcher' and the 4-axle, as the 'Defender'. Much later a 6 x 2 tractor unit was labelled as the ‘Leader’.
