Atkinson Borderer Low Loader – NCB Scale - 1:76

A firm that started producing steam wagons and trucks in the beginning of the 20th century, was turned in to a famous truck brand in the 1970s after a firm called Seddon Diesel Vehicles purchased it. This truck brand existed right until 2009, before it was sold to IVECO, Italy.

Atkinson was already manufacturing a truck model that had a fibreglass cabin since 1958. Named as Atkinson Mark I, the next generation truck (Mark II) that was developed in 1968 had a completely new designed cabin with several improvement in ergonomics and wider by 6 inches over the earlier model.

Frank Whalley who was the PR Manager for Seddon Diesel Vehicles then came up with the idea of naming different names for different configurations of trucks, they produced. For e.g. the 4 x 2 tractor units were called 'Borderer', while the 6 x 4 was called 'Venturer'. The double-axle chassis was named as the 'Raider', the 3-axle was 'Searcher' and the 4-axle, as the 'Defender'. Much later a 6 x 2 tractor unit was labelled as the ‘Leader’. These models continued to be made until 1975.

The National Coal Board or (NCB) of UK used to be a national firm that was responsible for managing all the coal mines (similar to India’s government-owned SAIL). The firm had purchased few of the Atkinson Borderer’s Low Loader units to be used for rescue missions in the mining area.
