Designed by veteran Alfa Romeo designer Giuseppe Scarnati, the Alfa Romeo Giulia was launched in 1962 as the replacement for the model Alfa Romeo Giulietta. With a 1.6-litres engine and a Solex made vertical double barrel carburettor, this car was quite powerful for a box-shaped sedan and could easily do 170 km/hr. This model had a drag coefficient of 0.34 prompting Alfa Romeo to advertise this car with the words, "la Giulia, l'auto disegnata dal vento"*.
Popularity was huge for this car and eventually 5.8 lakh cars in several variants such as sedan, coupe, estate got produced until 1977 from factories in Italy, Portugal and Zimbabwe.
This new variant called the Nuova Super was launched in 1974.
