The Alfa Romeo GTA 1600 (with 1.6 litre engine) was a car, whose body was made out of aluminium panels meshed with thin sheet metal panels through rivets. This GT car designed by Italian design house Bertone was so lightweight, that Alfa Romeo decided to include the alphabet ‘A’ to the letters GT (‘A’ meant Alleggerita, or lightweight in Italian).
The GTA 1600 was so much successful, that Autodelta, (racing division of Alfa Romeo) decided to introduce a model with a smaller 1.3 litre engine and called it the 'Junior'.
Sponsored by digestif (an alcohol based drink infused with herbs) maker Jaegermeister, this Alfa Romeo GTA 1300 Junior was driven by German Rainer Maschke at a Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (popularly known as DRM) in 1982.
In all, about 450 Alfa Romeo 1300 GTAs were produced.
